Newton's Laws of Motion

The three rules connecting force and motion.

  1. STEP 1 · FIRST LAW

    An object stays at rest or moves uniformly unless a net force acts on it (inertia).

  2. STEP 2 · SECOND LAW

    Net force equals mass times acceleration.

  3. STEP 3 · THIRD LAW

    Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

  4. WORKED EXAMPLE

    A 1,000 kg car accelerating at 2 m/s² needs a net force of 2,000 N.

Formulas

Second law

F = m a

F newtons, m kg, a m/s²

Momentum

p = m v

Weight

W = m g

g = 9.81 m/s²
